OJSC Geocenter-Moscow, which is part of the state geological holding company Rosgeo, will assess the prospects of the Ukhta District in Russia’s northwestern Komi Republic, where deposits of shale oil may be located, the company’s press service reported.

MOSCOW, August 18 (RIA Novosti) – OJSC Geocenter-Moscow, which is part of the state geological holding company Rosgeo, will prospect for shale oil deposits in the district of Ukhta in Russia’s northwestern Komi Republic, the company’s press service reported.

The company is contracted by the state to conduct research on subcontracting conditions. The aim of the project is to explore and confirm that the highly bituminous Domanic-type deposits, an unconventional source of shale oil, are all oil-and gas-bearing. The drilling will be carried out in high-strength category rocks.

Bituminous limestone has been uncovered in this area, at drill well No. 5, at a depth of 528 feet. The planned geophysical and geological studies will last until the end of 2014. The researchers will also examine the region’s subsurface structure, determine the minerals in its sections, estimate its permeability and reservoir features, and the possible oil and gas output.

The project provides for a set of guidelines to protect the environment once the work is completed, the press service said. The land that has been used for the wellsite will be restored, and the wells will be plugged.

Rosgeo is a Russian company that carries out the full range of services related to geological exploration, from regional studies to parametric drilling and monitoring of subsurface conditions.
