Moscow will seek an international investigation into the attacks on civilians in Ukraine and the death of Russian journalists, Russia’s Foreign Ministry’s Commissioner for Human Rights said Wednesday.

ST. PETERSBURG, June 18 (RIA Novosti) – Moscow will seek an international investigation into the attacks on civilians in Ukraine and the death of Russian journalists, Russia’s Foreign Ministry’s Commissioner for Human Rights said Wednesday.

“We want an effective and transparent investigation under the international control into all the attack on civilians, including in Odessa, and also the death of our journalists and the illegal capture of our journalists,” Konstantin Dolgov said.

The investigation aims at punishing both those who had committed the crimes and their organizers, Dolgov said on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Legal Forum.

A work to organize the investigation is currently underway, Dolgov said, adding that the goal is to receive “an adequate reaction” from Russia’s international partners.

“There are certain signals from the OSCE and our European partners say there is a need for these investigations, but I have yet heard nothing from the Americans,” he said.

A reporter for state-run VGTRK television Igor Kornelyuk died Tuesday from wounds sustained during a mortar attack near the eastern Ukrainian city of Luhansk. The death of his colleague, sound engineer Anton Voloshin, was confirmed later in the day. Following the incident Russia’s Investigative Committee has launched a criminal investigation into the deadly attack.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has ordered a thorough investigation into the death of the Russian reporters. The United Nations Security Council also issued a statement Tuesday calling for a probe into the death of journalists in Ukraine.
