The Russian government has approved a state-run program to boost the socio-economic development of the Arctic regions of the country, the press service of the Cabinet of Ministers has reported.

MOSCOW, April 24 (RIA Novosti) – The Russian government has approved a state-run program to boost the socio-economic development of the Arctic regions of the country, the press service of the Cabinet of Ministers has reported.

"This state program is analytical in nature and includes ‘industry-specific’ activities within the framework of Russian state-run programs implemented in the Arctic zone,” the statement said, adding that the program would be carried out in the period 2015-2020.

According to the statement, the program was prepared and will be carried out by the Ministry of Regional Development, and a number of other government agencies will also participate in its implementation, including the Ministry for Development of the Russian Far East, the Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Industry and Trade, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"The implementation of the state program activities, along with the activities stipulated in the ‘industry-specific’ government programs and federal target programs on the development of the Russian region of the Arctic, will have a positive impact on its socio-economic development and the national security of the country,” the report stated.

At a meeting of the country’s Security Council on Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed officials to create a unified basing structure for surface vessels and submarines of the new generation in the Russian region of the Arctic, to strengthen the border, to provide full funding for the development of the region from 2017, and to create a new public authority to implement Russian policy in the Arctic.
