The ruling United Russia party, which holds a majority in the Duma, will support Dmitry Medvedev's candidacy for the post of Russian Prime Minister, the party's Duma faction head Andrei Vorobyov said on Monday.

“When Vladimir Putin introduces Dmitry Medvedev as candidate [for the post of Russian Prime Minister] we will support the leader of our list, we have the majority! We hope the opposition does the same!” he wrote in his twitter account.

Vladimir Putin became the president of Russia in 2000 and remained president until 2008, when he supported Dmitry Medveded as presidential candidate and took on the role of prime minister.

At the United Russia party convention in September 2011, Medvedev suggested United Russia support Putin as a presidential candidate. He then took up Putin’s offer to head the party list in the December 2011 parliamentary election, allowing him to take the post of prime minister.

On March 2, in his talk with journalists, Putin confirmed his intention to nominate Dmitry Medveded for the PM post, so he could continue the work he had started, while heading the country, he said. At the moment, Putin and Medvedev hold regular meetings to discuss the formation of the future government.
