Over 6,000 people were affected by last weekend's flooding in Russia's southern Krasnodar Territory, regional Governor Alexander Tkachyov said on Wednesday.

Over 6,000 people were affected by last weekend's flooding in Russia's southern Krasnodar Territory, regional Governor Alexander Tkachyov said on Wednesday.

A state of emergency was declared in the region after torrential rains in mountainous areas caused rivers to overflow, flooding more than 20 villages and killing at least 14 people. A further 9 people are still missing.

"Over 6,000 people were injured or lost their homes and all their possessions," Tkachyov said in a statement.

The region's emergencies ministry said well over 2,000 homes had been damaged in the disaster, which caused an estimated 2 billion rubles ($65.7 million) in damage.

Every individual affected by the catastrophe will receive 150,000 rubles ($4,930) in compensation from the regional budget. An initial installment of 10,000 rubles ($328) per person was handed out on Tuesday.

Police and journalists from Rostov region which borders Krasnodar Territory have started a campaign to collect clothes and blankets for the flood victims.

Further flooding in the region has not been ruled out, especially since heavy rain is forecast in the area for Wednesday night.
