MOSCOW, November 12 (RIA Novosti) - Corrupt government officials must be jailed, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said in his state-of-the-nation address on Thursday.
Medvedev said, however, that imprisonment alone could not solve the problem of corruption in Russia.
He said various measures should be taken to tackle "this social evil" in Russia, "from improvements in legislation, better work of law enforcement and judicial systems, to making citizens more intolerant... to instances of this social evil."
He said 4,500 corruption cases have been brought to court in the first half of 2009, a total of 532 public officials and 700 law-enforcers have been convicted.
