Obama to Address Next Steps in Syrian Refugee Crisis at UN Summit
President Barack Obama will address next steps in addressing the Syrian refugee crisis at a high-level meeting on September 20 on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Secretary of State John Kerry stated in a press release on Monday.
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — In August, the UN Refugee Agency registered more than 4.8 million Syrians displaced in the course of the country’s five year civil war.

In 2015, President Obama pledged to accept 10,000 Syrian refugees into the United States over the next year, a goal that was met one month ahead of schedule.

"We recognize that more needs to be done to help those who are besieged inside Syria; more has to be done to assist refugees," Kerry said on news that the United States had met its goal of accepting 10,000 Syrian refugees into the country over the past year.
To address the humanitarian crisis in Syria, "President Obama will host the Leaders’ Summit on Refugees… to increase humanitarian assistance and create more long-term, durable opportunities for refugees," Kerry said.
