MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said in a statement on Monday that it became a Related Organization of the United Nations.
"Member States of the United Nations (UN), through the General Assembly, today unanimously adopted a resolution approving the Agreement to make the International Organization for Migration (IOM) a Related Organization of the UN," the statement said.
The statement added that the new status would allow both the United Nations and the IOM to enhance cooperation on behalf of both migrants and the UN member states.
IOM is an intergovernmental institution established in December, 1951. It has some 9,500 staff and around 450 offices around the world. The organization focuses on providing services and advice to migrants and governments and developing international cooperation on migration issues.
