The UN Security Council should be used for seeking compromises between its five permanent members rather than "flaring up passions", Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated Sunday.

MOSCOW, September 28 (RIA Novosti) - The UN Security Council should be used for seeking compromises between its five permanent members rather than "flaring up passions", Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated Sunday.

"Not always do we manage to convince our partners not to use the Security Council for flaring up passions. It [the Security Council] was established, first of all, for seeking compromises between its five permanent members each of which has the right of veto," said Lavrov in an interview with Rossiya-1 broadcaster and Russia Today TV channel.

Lavrov also called for an end to using the United Nations and its structures "for selfish, one-sided and egotistical purposes".

"Our western partners are tempted to use the United Nations and other separate topics that arise in the world for a sharpened polemic aimed at the domestic audience: some will soon hold elections, others are struggling for posts in the European structures," Lavrov added.

The UN's Security Council consists of 15 countries five of which – Russia, China, the United States, France and the United Kingdom – are permanent members. These countries are not re-elected and have the right of veto, meaning they can veto any decision made by the Security Council.
