WASHINGTON, August 22 (RIA Novosti) - The fight of the United States against a terrorist group Islamic State (IS) may require additional budget funds, Pentagon chief Chuck Hagel said at a press briefing.

"You’re shifting [money] all the time on what you think is going to be required,” Hagel said. “We’ve had to move assets over the last couple of months... to accomplish what we accomplished in Iraq. That costs money, that takes certain monies out of certain funds. So it’s a constant, fluid process as you plan for these.

“We’re constantly shaping a budget to assure that resources match the mission and the mission and the resources match the threat," Hagel said, answering the question, if the situation in Iraq is going to affect the Pentagon's budget for 2015.

“We've already asked the Congress in a separate fund, a counterterrorism fund for $5 billion, half a billion of that specifically for the moderate Syrian opposition,” Hagel said.

Since August 8, the US Central Command has conducted a total of 90 airstrikes at the IS targets across Iraq.

Islamic State, formerly known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS), is a radical Sunni group that had been fighting in Syria before launching an offensive in Iraq in June. Later that month, the militants announced the establishment of an Islamic caliphate on the territories that had fallen under its control.
