The Ukrainian side has recognized the cargo sent by Russia as humanitarian aid, the Ukrainian government website said Saturday.

MOSCOW, August 17 (RIA Novosti) – The Ukrainian side has recognized the cargo sent by Russia as humanitarian aid, the Ukrainian government website said Saturday.

“In accordance with Articles 4 and 5 of the law of Ukraine on Humanitarian Aid and taking into account President Petro Poroshenko’s initiative concerning acceptance of humanitarian aid within the framework of the international humanitarian mission under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), to recognize the cargo as humanitarian aid,” the statement read.

Ukraine’s Social Policy Minister Lyudmyla Denysova signed the order recognizing the cargo as humanitarian aid.

The letter with a list of things carried by 280 trucks from Russia and signed by the head of the ICRC regional delegation, Pascal Cuttat, was submitted to the Ukrainian Ministry of Social Policy earlier on Saturday. According to the letter the cargo includes 12 kinds of goods totaling 1,856 tons, which fully corresponds with the weight of the cargo declared by Moscow.

“The receiver of the humanitarian cargo is the ICRC mission in Ukraine. The cargo will be transferred to Ukraine by ICRC representatives through the Donetsk checkpoint,” according to the statement.

In early August, in light of a worsening humanitarian situation in the Ukrainian east, Russia came up with a proposal at the UN Security Council to send an international humanitarian mission with Russian humanitarian aid under the auspices of the ICRC to the troubled regions.

On August 12, 280 trucks carrying about 2,000 tons of humanitarian aid, with 400 tons of grain, 100 tons of sugar, 62 tons of baby food, 54 tons of medication, 12,000 sleeping bags and 69 mobile electrical generators set off from the Moscow region heading towards conflict areas in crisis-torn Ukraine.
