For two days, visitors will be able see more than 20 paintings, including works by Vasily Vereshchagin, Ilya Repin, Ivan Aivazovsky, Alexander Yakovlev, Pyotr Konchalovsky and Zinaida Serebryakova.
One of the auction's top lots is “Portrait of Vera Repina, the Artist's Wife,” painted by Ilya Repin in 1878. The work is valued at 1 to 1.5 million pounds.
The exhibition also features a representative selection of six works by Vasily Vereshchagin, an artist whose work is not available very often. After traveling to India in 1874-1876, Vereshchagin painted the Taj Mahal from different angles and at different times of the day. At the exhibition in Moscow, Sotheby's will show “Taj Mahal. Evening” (valued at 250,000 to 450,000 pounds).
