Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Central Election Commission chief Vladimir Churov to analyze the results of regional parliamentary elections that saw the ruling United Russia party win a large share of the vote on a low turnout.
The opposition, however, does not recognize its defeat: the Communist Party plans to contest the gubernatorial elections in the Bryansk, Ryazan, Saratov and Penza regions, as well as the Krasnodar Territory.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree firing Regional Development Minister Oleg Govorun, a Kremlin official said. Govorun is believed to have taken offense when Putin publicly reprimanded him. Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied the dismissal.
