MOSCOW, July 30 (RIA Novosti) – Crews of MiG-31 “Foxhound” supersonic interceptor aircraft held drills accompanying Tu-95 “Bear” strategic bombers in the Arctic, the press service of the Eastern Military District reported Wednesday.

“Today, the crews of MiG-31 from the air base of the naval aviation of the Pacific Fleet located in Kamchatka have performed practical tasks providing air cover to Tu-95 strategic bombers in the Arctic zone,” the chief of the press service, Col. Alexander Gordeyev, said.

This year, the Eastern Military District has significantly increased the number of its training exercises in the Artic.

All flights are carried out in strict accordance with international regulations on the use of airspace without violating the borders of other states.

An icon of the Cold War, the Tupolev Tu-95 is still the core of Russia’s strategic aviation. It can carry up to six X-55 missiles and is employed to strike enemy targets at any time and under any weather condition.
