ROSTOV-ON-DON, April 8 (RIA Novosti) - Policemen in Russia’s North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia killed a militant who put up armed resistance after he was asked to surrender, a spokesman for local police said on Monday.
Ingush law enforcers announced a counter-terrorism operation on early Monday in the village of Dolakovo.
“Policemen encountered armed resistance, which resulted in a shootout as they inspected one of the houses. The assailant was killed in the shootout,” the spokesman said, adding that the counter-terrorism operation continues in the village.
None of the law enforcement officers were killed or wounded during the shootout, the spokesman added.
The Islamist insurgency, once confined largely to the republic of Chechnya, has spread across the North Caucasus in recent years. Attacks on security forces, police and civilians are reported regularly in the neighboring republics of Dagestan, Ingushetia and Kabardino-Balkaria.
