A total of 11 cars were burnt in the Russian capital early on Saturday in what police suspect to be a series of arsonist attacks, a police source said.

The cars, mostly foreign-made models, were destroyed in a span of six hours in various districts of Moscow.

Two cars were burnt under similar circumstances in south-western Moscow last night and three cars were destroyed at a parking lot in southern Moscow the night before.

Police launched an investigation as some of the incidents bore clear signs of arson.

A wave of arsonist attacks destroyed over a hundred cars in Moscow in May-July 2008. Some 30 people, mostly minors, were detained on suspicion of involvement in these attacks.

The arsons forced Moscow car owners to organize temporary evening and night vigilance in the yards and around parking lots at the time.
