Russia’s GAZ Group, maker of the Volga sedan and Gazelle minivan, has sent its core production personnel on a two-week paid leave over abnormally hot weather, the company said on Monday.

Russia’s GAZ Group, maker of the Volga sedan and Gazelle minivan, has sent its core production personnel in Nizhny Novgorod on two-week paid leave over abnormally hot weather, the company said on Monday.

Temperatures in central Russia have hovered at over 30 degrees Celsius (nearly 90 degrees Fahrenheit) for four weeks now and meteorologists predict the heat wave will continue, with temperatures expected to reach nearly 40 degrees.

“The management of the GAZ Group, jointly with the trade union committees, decided to grant a corporate leave for the workforce of core enterprises from July 26 to Aug. 8, 2010. The decision was made due to the abnormal heat,” the company said in a statement.

After the corporate leave is over, GAZ will continue to operate a six-day working week due to the expected growth of sales, with a monthly production volume of 8,000-10,000 vehicles, the statement said.
