WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US State Department and members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are determined to enhance collaboration against terrorism, department’s deputy spokesperson Mark Toner said in a release on Monday.
“They [US, ASEAN foreign ministers] called for specific actions to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, and they pledged their commitment to strengthen cooperation against terrorism and violent extremism,” Toner said.
Toner’s comments come from Laos following the ASEAN-US Ministerial Meeting.
Resolution 2270 was unanimously approved by the council in March, in response to a January nuclear test that North Korea claimed was of a hydrogen bomb and the February launch of a satellite. The measure bans the sale of military equipment and most luxury goods to the communist nation. It also authorizes searches of vessels leaving and entering North Korean ports and the seizure of contraband goods.
The ASEAN foreign ministers meeting is held in the capital Vientiane on July 21-26 with ASEAN regional forum slated for its last day. The forum will be attended by representatives from 27 countries, including 10 ASEAN members, EU states and North Korea.
