WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US-led coalition against the Islamic State (ISIL or Daesh) carried out 17 airstrikes against the terror group’s positions in Syria and Iraq on Thursday, the Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve said in a press release.

"In Syria, coalition military forces conducted eight strikes using attack, fighter and remotely piloted aircraft against ISIL [Islamic State] targets," the release stated on Friday.

One airstrike near the city of Abu Kamal destroyed an Daesh workover rig, according to the coalition. Additionally, seven strikes near Manbij hit seven Daesh tactical units and destroyed six fighting positions and an artillery piece.

On Wednesday, the National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces asked the Pentagon to immediately suspend the airstrikes following reports that at least 60 civilians had been killed a day earlier in US-led coalition strikes on al-Tukhar village, nine miles north of Manbij.

Coalition airstrikes on Thursday also targeted Islamic State positions near six Iraqi cities, where nine strikes coordinated with the government of Iraq destroyed the terror group’s tactical units, weapons caches, fighting positions and mortar systems.

Near Mosul, three strikes destroyed an Daesh fighting position, heavy machine gun, vehicle, two mortar systems, tunnel and assembly areas, engineering equipment and four supply caches, the release noted.

The US-led coalition of more than 60 nations has been conducting anti-Daesh airstrikes in Syria and Iraq since the summer of 2014.

The terror group, also known as Daesh in Arabic, is outlawed in the United States, Russia and many other nations.
