Jordan Offers at New York Meeting Matrix of Terrorism Designations - FM

Foreign Minister said that Jordan presented a matrix at the UN meeting in New York that reflects each country’s understanding of which groups should be designated as terrorists in the Syrian peace process.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – Jordan presented a matrix at an international meeting on Syria in New York that reflects each countries’ understanding of which groups should be designated as terrorists in the Syrian peace process, Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh told reporters on Friday.

"Jordan was asked to coordinate… the positions of respective countries as to their understanding and to help develop a common understanding on who should be designated as terrorist organizations," Judeh stated. "And today in the meeting… I presented a matrix that reflects the positions of respective countries."

Earlier on Friday, 18 foreign ministers of the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) started negotiations in New York City. Participants of the talks include UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, UN envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, US State Secretary John Kerry, Arab League and Organization of Islamic Cooperation representatives.

Judeh said ongoing consultations were in process and he hoped the countries would agree on a UN resolution by Friday afternoon at the discussions in New York.

On Thursday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said the Jordan-coordinated list included 160 organizations possibly tied to terrorist groups.
