Russia should become Europe’s chief ally in a war against Daesh (ISIL/ISIS), Matteo Salvini, head of the Italian political party Lega Nord, believes.

"My party, Lega Nord, petitions all state institutions to immediately begin cooperating with Russia regarding the international actions against Daesh cutthroats. Russia should be Europe's chief ally," Salvini told RIA Novosti prior to his visit to Moscow.

Salvini also added that he and his associates seek to unite Russia and Europe because the real 'enemy number one' is "Islamist terrorists from Daesh, not Moscow."

"Only Russia, thanks to a geopolitical decision made by President Putin, understands that harsh methods are required to deal with terrorists," he said.

According to RIA Novosti, Salvini also remarked that aside from Moscow all the other countries (including France and the US) do is talk.

Russia has been conducting airstrikes against Daesh terrorists in Syria since September 30 at the behest of President Bashar Assad.

A US-led international coalition of over 60 states has also been carrying out a separate campaign against Daesh in Syria and Iraq since 2014, albeit without the approval of the Syrian government or the UN Security Council.
