Defending champion Nikolay Davydenko suffered a shock first-round defeat to 210th-ranked Canadian Roberto Farah at the Munich Open on Tuesday.

Davydenko, the world No. 56, capitulated in 1 hour and 22 minutes against the qualifier to lose 6-3, 6-2 at the French Open warm-up event on clay.

The Russian beat home player Florian Mayer to secure last year's crown, which was his last career title.

Four-time Grand Slam semifinalist Davydenko has had an erratic season so far, shedding 16 positions in the ATP rankings after skipping the Barcelona Open last week.

He pushed Roger Federer close in the Rotterdam semifinal in February, losing in three sets.
