Youngsters have taken to the streets in central Cairo to urge the current authorities to support tourism in the country, whose tourist industry suffered some $1 billion in damage from the February revolution.

Tourism is the key industry in the North African country, whose Red Sea attracts 14 million tourists, including divers and surfers, from all over the world every year.

More than a hundred people clad as ancient pharaohs or wearing folk garb are chanting slogans in support of the 18-day revolution, which toppled President Hosni Mubarak last month after 32 years in power, and are calling on their compatriots to treat foreign tourists with respect.

"Our event is an appeal to the new authorities to reinvigorate the travel industry," a demonstrator said.

After Mubarak was forced out on February 11, the Supreme Council of the military has been temporarily running the country.

Western nations have lifted bans on trips to Egypt, but Russia, which tops Egypt's tourist list with 2.5 million people visiting Egyptian resorts in 2010 alone, has not yet lifted a ban issued by the Foreign Ministry.

About 10% of able-bodied Egyptians are employed in the travel industry. In 2010, the country earned about $13 billion from tourism.
