Senior Russian Senator and head of the Federation Council's foreign relations committee Mikhail Margelov has called Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi "a demoniac colonel" whose regime is doomed.

Senior Russian Senator and head of the Federation Council's foreign relations committee Mikhail Margelov has called Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi "a demoniac colonel" whose regime is doomed.

Some 2,000 people are believed to have been killed in clashes between protesters and pro-Gaddafi forces since a popular uprising began in the North African country on February 15. Inspired by recent revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt, Libyans are demanding an end to Gaddafi's 42-year authoritarian rule.

"Gaddafi's regime is agonizing. It is dead-trapped, as hunters say. Not only Libyans are fed up with Gaddafi, but also the international community," Margelov said.

Margelov said he hoped that the blood of those killed in Libya will put an end to the "eerie list of crimes by the demoniac colonel."

Earlier on Wednesday, Gaddafi told supporters in Tripoli that he could not step down because he is a "symbol for the Libyan people."
