The Ukrainian government will consider on Wednesday the proposed sale of the country's fixed-line telecommunications monopoly, Ukrtelecom.

Ukraine announced plans in May to sell its entire 92.79 percent stake in Ukrtelecom for about 10 billion hryvni ($1.26 bln) by the end of 2010.

However, Ukrainian officials later said the sale could be postponed as a final decision on the future of the "social telephone" program, which subsidized charges for the poor and residents of rural areas, had not been made.

The Ukrainian Cabinet approved in August a 2010 financial plan for the company, estimating revenues of eight billion hryvni (about $1 bln) and a net profit of 109 mln hryvni (about $13.8 mln), compared to losses of 456.4 million hryvni (about $57.8 mln) last year.

Plans to privatize Ukrtelecom have been in the works since the 1990s. The company has over 10 million customers and also provides Internet and mobile phone services.
