Two tawny owls died in a vandal fire in an aviary in southwest Moscow last night, a spokeswoman for the Vorobyevy Gory nature reserve said on Friday.

Vandals attacked the same aviary last week, setting the two owls free. One of them was found quite near the aviary, and local residents helped locate the other later on.

The Vorobyevy Gory nature reserve was opened in 2005 as part of a Moscow government program for ecological education. Peacocks and pheasants are kept in aviaries in the spring and summer, and squirrels and predatory birds live there round the year.
