BISHKEK, December 15 (RIA Novosti) - Drug police in Kyrgyzstan have seized around 120 kilograms (265 lbs) of Afghan opium and heroin bound for Russia, a spokeswoman for the Kyrgyz Drug Control Agency said on Monday.

A total of 98 kilograms of opium and 20 kilograms of heroin were seized from a 40-year-old Kyrgyz national in the Chuysk region near the capital of Bishkek during an operation late on Sunday, the spokeswoman said.

The drugs with a street value of $2 million, "was due to be repackaged and sent to Russia," she said. "This is the biggest seizure of Afghan drugs made in the republic in the past three years," she added.

Police said a major drug trafficking network had been uncovered.

Kyrgyzstan and other Central Asian republics are a major gateway to Russia and neighboring countries for the continual flow of drugs from Afghanistan, the world's leading producer of heroin.
