DUSHANBE, April 9 (RIA Novosti) - Over 120 kilograms of heroin has been seized in northern Tajikistan, the country's drugs control agency said on Wednesday.

A spokesman for the Drug Control Agency (DCA) said: "DCA officers along with local officials seized the heroin near the village of Pakshiv."

He said the 124 kgs of heroin, the largest haul seized in the former Soviet republic in the last five years, was hidden near a road leading to neighboring Kyrgyzstan.

Narcotics trade is an acute problem for the former Soviet Central Asian republics due to a continual flow of illegal drugs from neighboring Afghanistan, the world's largest heroin and opium producer. The drugs are then smuggled via Russia's Urals region onto Western Europe.
