Over 150 wounded Palestinians treated in Egyptian hospitals

CAIRO, March 6 (RIA Novosti) - More than 150 Palestinians wounded in the recent Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip have been transferred to Egypt for medical treatment, local officials said on Thursday.

Egypt opened its only crossing with the Gaza Strip to allow wounded Palestinians through on March 2, following Israel's raid on the Gaza Strip. At least 120 people were killed during the military operation, which came in response to rocket attacks by militants based in the Hamas-controlled enclave.

A total of 27 ambulances and 50 trucks with humanitarian aid have so far been sent from Egypt to Gaza.

This is the first time Egypt had opened its border crossing with Gaza since part of it was destroyed by Palestinian militants in a series of explosions on January 23.

After crossing had been breached, Egyptian authorities allowed Palestinians free access to the Sinai Peninsula to buy food, fuel and other essential items in short supply following an Israeli embargo imposed on the Gaza Strip.

On February 4, after Egyptian security forces sealed the border wall, violence broke out between Palestinians and Egyptian police. At least one Palestinian was killed and six injured in armed clashes at the Rafah checkpoint on the Gaza-Egypt border.

The Gaza Strip has been ruled by Hamas since last June, when the hard-line Islamic group took control of the territory, ousting President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah.
