MAKHACHKALA, August 23 (RIA Novosti) - Two servicemen were killed and at least seven wounded when a military convoy came under fire in Russia's southern republic of Daghestan Thursday, the local Interior Ministry said.
The attack in Daghestan, which borders on the troubled republic of Chechnya, occurred at around 3:30 p.m. Moscow time (11:30 p.m. GMT). The policemen were returning from a mission in the Untsukul district, in western Daghestan, where locals have been protesting to demand compensation for land inundated by the construction of a hydroelectric dam.
"Gunfire erupted. The cars were not armored and could not protect the people inside," the source said.
Although no criminal case has yet been launched, an investigation is underway.
