Iran, EU to hold new round of nuclear talks May 31 in Spain

TEHRAN, May 19 (RIA Novosti) - A new round of talks between Iran's top nuclear negotiator and the EU's foreign policy chief over the Iranian nuclear program might be held in Spain on May 31, the Iranian foreign minister said Saturday.

Ali Larijani and Javier Solana last met in Turkey for the first round of nuclear negotiations on April 25-26, and reportedly made progress towards a common stance.

"The second round of talks between Larijani and Solana will most probably be held in Spain," Manouchehr Mottaki said in an interview with Iran's IRNA news agency.

The Iranian minister said the sides would discuss possible solutions to the current crisis around Iran's uranium enrichment program.

"We must wait until the start of the talks and hope that the sides could find the acceptable way to continue these talks," he said.

In October 2006 the EU actually recognized its failure to negotiate with Iran, which refused to stop uranium enrichment. The EU also approved the introduction of sanctions against Iran by the UN Security Council, which adopted unanimously Resolution 1737 in December 2006 and voted for tougher sanctions under Resolution 1747 on March 24, 2007.

In response Iran declared it would restrict cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) until its "nuclear dossier" was transferred back from the UN Security Council to the IAEA.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad reiterated Wednesday that the Islamic Republic's nuclear program was "legitimate and fully serving civilian purposes, in line with Iran's membership in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)."

The Iranian hard-line leader also reaffirmed that Iran had joined countries producing nuclear fuel on an industrial scale. Iran first announced industrial production of civilian-grade nuclear fuel April 9 and vowed to continue uranium enrichment despite international sanctions.

A recent inspection by the IAEA confirmed that Iran was running up to 1,300 centrifuges at its main nuclear facility at Natanz, having apparently worked out pervious technical problems, and was producing fuel suitable for nuclear reactors.

The 60-day deadline the UN Security Council set for Iran to implement the resolution's provisions expires on May 23. The UN Security Council will hold another meeting to adopt further steps on the Islamic republic later.
