Below is a summary of the main security-related events in the North Caucasus on January 10, 2006

* A senior military official said that law enforcement bodies had eliminated a total of 290 militants in the region in 2005

* The Federal Security Service (FSB) said a member of an international terrorist group, Turkish national Ali Soytekin, had been apprehended in the Russian republic of Daghestan on December 29, 2005 in a joint special operation conducted by the FSB and police

* A local man was detained for illegally possessing weapons in the Russian republic of Daghestan, a spokesman for the local law enforcement agencies said

* Two unknown assailants shot and wounded a policeman in the early hours in the Republic of North Ossetia

* Acting Chechen Prime Minister Ramzan Kadyrov said the law enforcement bodies guaranteed political and social stability in Chechnya and the republic would become one of the calmest parts of the world in two years' time
