SERGEI IVANOV: NO SENSE IN RETURNING RUSSIAN PEACEKEEPERS TO KOSOVO

VLADIMIR, March 26, 2004. (RIA Novosti). "There is no sense in returning Russian peacekeepers to Kosovo in the obtaining situation and under the existing mandate," Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said while meeting with journalists in Vladimir (a regional center in the Central Federal Disctrict of the Russian Federation).

In his words, one of the reasons why the Russian peacekeepers cannot return to Kosovo is the fact that their actions under the existing mandate will useless. "Our peacekeepers were perfectly aware that armed people who committed extremist acts were walking about Kosovo," Sergei Ivanov said.

He considers the situation in Kosovo to be disturbing. According to him, the illegal armed formations are striving to create a mono-confessional state there, with ethnic cleansings under way.

The minister opines that the stabilization of the situation in Kosovo is a process for future diplomatic talks. "And so far we are making practical steps in helping the indigenous population," the head of the Defense Ministry said. He meant rendering of humanitarian aid by Russia to Serb refugees,
