At least 174 inmates escaped from a prison in Arcahaie, northern Haiti, killing one security guard, media reported Sunday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the Daily Star news outlet, the prisoners overpowered guards after they were released from an overcrowded holding pen. The inmates stole weapons and opened fire with the police.

One guard and one prisoner was killed and others were injured, according to the news outlet.

Haitian authorities have launched a manhunt for the fugitives with support from UN peacekeepers. Authorities urge people to stay indoors until the operation is underway.
