WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States has a strategic interest in ensuring Europe resolves its migration crisis because of the humanitarian toll and potential consequences for the continent’s politics, President Barack Obama told a joint news conference with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi on Tuesday.
"It is a strategic interest of the United States to make sure that the migration crisis that has been taken place in Europe is solved,” Obama said. "It is a strategic interest because of the terrible loss of life that we see when people attempt to reach Europe, but also because of distorting effects it could have on European politics."
Obama reaffirmed that his administration remains "deeply committed" to helping Europe address the crisis.
