On Friday, the event will be visible in the Western hemisphere, and coupled with a “ring of fire” solar eclipse that took place on September 1, some believe that the planet is doomed.
The completely unscientific illogic behind their fear appears to be a collection of Bible verses, including Luke 21:25-26, which states, “there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; Men's hearts failing them for fear, and looking after those things which are coming on the earth.”
The entertainment website Signs of the End Times also notes the Bible’s Book of Matthew, chapter 24:29, which states: “Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken,” the Express reported.
The paper also noted that a terrified Facebook user posted, “the Lord will make the moon turn red as blood … and turn black. Sounds familiar?”
The last black moon occurred in March, 2014, and stargazers in the Western Hemisphere will not have another chance to witness one until July 2019, unless, that is, the planet does not survive this one.
