Luxemburg is happy with the fact that the Ukrainian conflict is not escalating any further, Xavier Bettel, the country's prime minister, said Thursday.

BRUSSELS, October 23 (RIA Novosti) – Luxemburg is happy with the fact that the Ukrainian conflict is not escalating any further, Xavier Bettel, the country's prime minister, said Thursday.

"At the moment, in any case, according to the latest news, that we have received, there is no escalation and it makes us happy, I hope that this will continue," Bettel told journalists ahead of an EU summit.

An armed conflict erupted in Ukraine in mid-April, when Kiev launched a military operation against independence supporters in the country's southeastern regions.

On September 5, the conflicting sides agreed on a ceasefire during a meeting of the Contact Group on Ukraine in Minsk. The ceasefire came into force on the same day. The main provisions of the ceasefire include the cessation of hostilities in Ukraine's southeast and an exchange of prisoners between independence fighters and Kiev forces.

On September 19, a memorandum specifying the implementation of the ceasefire was adopted at another meeting of the Contact Group in Minsk. It was also agreed that the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) would be closely monitoring the situation in Ukraine.

Both Kiev forces and independence supporters have accused each other of violating the ceasefire agreements after the Minsk meetings. According to the OSCE the ceasefire is generally holding.
