MOSCOW, October 23 (RIA Novosti) - South China's Guangdong Province on Thursday reported 550 new dengue cases, bringing the total number up to 39,919, the National Health Planning Commission said as quoted by China News.

The disease has affected people living in the province’s 20 prefecture-level cities. The capital city of Guangzhou has so far reported 33,385 cases and is the hardest-hit, followed by Foshan with 3,289 cases.

Of the total 20 cities, ten have reported less than 200 cases. The city of Shanwei brings up the rear with only six confirmed patients.

Some 23 provinces or regions of China including Zhejiang, Fujian, Yunnan and Guangxi have been caught in the dengue outbreak this year.

Dengue fever can be caused by any one of four related viruses transmitted by mosquitoes. In September, China’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention claimed that mosquito population in the country was five times the normal level, leading to the outbreak, with some researchers saying that rainy weather had contributed to it.

Dengue fever patients develop such symptoms as fever, headache, vomiting and muscle pain. The disease can be fatal if left untreated, and there is still no vaccine or cure against it. There have been no reports of human-to-human transmission.
