MOSCOW, October 15 (RIA Novosti) - Amnesty International has urged prosecution against Hong Kong police officers who beat and kicked a pro-democracy protester in detention, the statement published on the organization's website Wednesday said.

"This appears to be a vicious attack against a detained man who posed no threat to the police. Any investigation into this incident must be carried out promptly and all individuals involved in unlawful acts must be prosecuted," Amnesty International Director for Hong Kong Mabel Au said in the statement.

Amnesty stated that the detainee was later taken by police to a hospital for medical treatment.

The organization claims to have talked to the lawyer of the detainee who said that the protester was first charged with attacking a police officer. The charges, however, were later altered, thus accusing the protester of unlawful assembly and hindering the police to carry out their duties.

"All those being held solely for exercising their rights to freedom of expression and assembly must be immediately and unconditionally released," the Amnesty director for Hong Kong added.

Through the statement, the organization called on the police of Hong Kong to refrain from unlawful use of forces.
