MOSCOW, October 5 (RIA Novosti) - Two residents of Donetsk have died due to shrapnel wounds received as a result of the shelling of the city, eight more have been injured, the City Council said on its website.

"As a result of shelling, eight civilians have been injured, two others have suffered shrapnel wounds incompatible with life," the City Council reported.

Earlier, the Donetsk authorities said that artillery fire and explosions could be heard in the city throughout the whole day, and the situation remained "very tense."

In April, Ukrainian authorities launched a military operation in the country's southeast, where independence supporters refused to accept the new government that was put in power following a coup in February.

On September 5, the Trilateral Contact Group on the situation in Ukraine met in Minsk. The group consists of representatives from Russia, Ukraine and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). As a result of the meeting, the Kiev authorities and the self-proclaimed people's republics of Luhansk and Donetsk agreed on a ceasefire, which took effect on the day. The sides also agreed to an international monitoring, exchange of prisoners and the opening of humanitarian corridors.

On September 19, a memorandum was drawn up by the group to include nine provisions that would implement the ceasefire agreement between Kiev and independence supports in eastern Ukraine.

Earlier on Sunday, the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council admitted that the ceasefire in Donbas was violated, but said it was done by uncontrolled military groups.
