UNITED NATIONS, September 29 (RIA Novosti) - Syria is committed to the full implementation of the provisions of the Convention of the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and within the frame of the OPCW, the country's Foreign Minister Walid Moualem said Monday.

"The big question that remains is whether those who are supplying the terrorists with this, and other types of weapons, wilt stop their actions and abide by international law," Moualem said addressing a plenary session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

In September, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) said that chlorine gas had been used "systematically and repeatedly" earlier this year in northern Syria. However, OPCW had no information on who was using the toxic chemicals. Syrian authorities have blamed Jabhat al-Nusra, a radical group linked to al-Qaeda, for carrying out chemical weapons attacks.

The armed conflict in Syria has killed more than 191,000 since it broke out in March 2011, according to UN estimates. Since the start of conflict, the government and the insurgents have traded accusations of using chemical agents, including chlorine.

In August 2013, an unprecedented chemical attack in Eastern Ghouta, a suburb of the Syrian capital, Damascus, killed almost 1500 civilians, leading to a large-scale international cooperation project. Following a breakthrough deal brokered by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry Syria agreed to place its chemical weapons under international control for further elimination . Somewhat later, Damascus joined the Chemical Weapons Convention and handed over documents on its arsenal to OPCW.

Nearly all of the chemical stockpile Syria declared has been destroyed on a converted US cargo ship, the Cape Ray.
