The leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) at Westminster, Angus Robertson, said Friday that his party will not support a British Government motion, authorizing military action in Iraq.

LONDON, September 27 (RIA Novosti), Mark Hirst – The leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) at Westminster, Angus Robertson, said Friday that his party will not support a British Government motion, authorizing military action in Iraq.

“The motion asks for military action that could last for years. There is no commitment in the motion for post-conflict resolution and for that reason we [the SNP Westminster parliamentary group] will not be able to support the motion and I and my right honorable friends will be voting against the Government this evening,” Robertson told MPs in the Commons.

“What happens after the bombing has started? There is not a single mention in the [Government] motion anywhere about a strategy or plan to win the peace,” the SNP leader stressed.

British MPs are currently debating whether or not the United Kingdom would take part in international airstrikes against the Islamic State (IS) militant group in Iraq, currently conducted by the United States and their allies.

Earlier on Friday, UK Prime Minister David Cameron said that the IS group poses a serious threat to the country's national interests.

The IS, formerly known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), has been fighting against the Syrian government since 2012. In June 2014, IS militants extended their attacks to northern and western Iraq. The group has seized vast areas in both countries and declared a caliphate on the territories under its control.
