"As of 18:00 [local time, 15:00 GMT] situation in Donetsk remains far from being calm, sounds of explosions are heard. At the moment, artillery shelling is under way in the city’s Petrovsky district," the city council said in a statement.
Participants of the Contact Group signed a protocol envisaging a ceasefire and the release of prisoners earlier in the day. The truce agreement came into force at 6 p.m. local time (15:00 GMT).
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko confirmed the agreement and ordered to cease fire starting at the time stated in the protocol. The Ukrainian president also called on both the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry and the OSCE to provide international monitoring of compliance with the bilateral ceasefire.
Friday’s talks in the Belarusian capital of Minsk involved representatives from Kiev government, Ukrainian southeastern regions, Russia and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
