MEXICO, September 3 (RIA Novosti) - Central America has become the world’s first region free of cluster munitions, as Belize joined the treaty banning the production, storage and use of cluster munitions, Christian Guillermet, a Costa Rican diplomat in the United Nations, told journalists.

With the accession of Belize, all seven Central American states, including Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama, are cluster munitions-free.

The statement on Belize’s joining was made at the Fifth Meeting of States Parties to the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM), taking place in San Jose, Costa Rica, from September 2 to 5.

The CCM was adopted on May 2008 in Ireland and came into force on August 2010. Currently, the convention is signed by 113 states and has been ratified by 84 of them.

According to the Cluster Munition Monitor, the number of cluster munitions victims worldwide totals about 54,000.
