KIEV, July 18 (RIA Novosti) – Ukrainian security officials have classified the Malaysian airliner crash in the Donetsk Region, which killed almost 300 people on Thursday, as an act of terrorism, Ukrinform news agency reported, citing sources in the police.
"Pre-trial investigation began under the Criminal Code article 258, part 3 – act of terrorism,” according to the statement.
A Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur crashed near the town of Torez in the Donetsk Region on Thursday, killing all 283 passengers and 15 crew members on board.
Ukrainian authorities and Malaysia Airlines are investigating the incident. Rescue workers have allegedly recovered two flight recorders from the scene.
The parties of the conflict in the southeast of Ukraine are blaming each other for shooting down the plane. Both sides agree that the attack was carried out using a Buk anti-aircraft missile system.
