The U.S. authorities will provide the required support to officials investigating Sunday’s deadly shooting in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, President Barack Obama said.

“Michelle and I were deeply saddened to learn of the shooting that tragically took so many lives in Wisconsin,” Obama said in a statement.

An unknown assailant opened fire on Sunday in a Sikh temple in the town of Oak Creek, killing six parishioners. Police shot the attacker dead. An investigation is underway.

“At this difficult time, the people of Oak Creek must know that the American people have them in our thoughts and prayers, and our hearts go out to the families and friends of those who were killed and wounded,” Obama said.

“My Administration will provide whatever support is necessary to the officials who are responding to this tragic shooting and moving forward with an investigation,” he said.

The Sikh religion originated in the 15th century in northern India. The Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund says on its website that the religion has some 25 million followers, 700,000 of them in the United States.
