At least 12 people, including three children, were killed and over 50 passengers were injured after a bus crash to ravine from a highway in the country's north-west, local transport police officer Nazario Torres told Argentinean C5N TV channel on Saturday.

A double-decker with 66 passengers, two drivers and a stewardess on board was driving from Bolivian city of Villazon to Buenos Aires and fell into a four meter depth ravine at the turn late on Friday. Seven passengers were killed at accident scene, while five injured people died in hospital.

The wreck happened at a highway near Barcena town in the Jujuy province at the 40th kilometer from the provincial capital of San Salvador de Jujuy. There were tourists from France, Germany, the U.K., Spain, Canada and Peru in the bus as well as Argentineans and Bolivians.

Under preliminary version, the wreck happened because of driver's speeding in a dangerous sector of road. Car accidents in Argentina kill about 7,000 people and injure over 40,000 which is one of the highest levels of accidents on the roads.
