Eight people were injured when an American Airlines jet caught fire at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport on Friday afternoon.

The fire was first reported around 2:30 p.m. local time. American Airlines said 161 passengers and 9 crew members were on board the plane that was headed from Chicago to Miami. Seven passengers and one flight attendant suffered minor injuries.

All passengers have been safely evacuated and the fire has been extinguished. It is not known whether the fire may be causing delays at O'Hare, one of the busiest airports in the world. According to Chicago media several ambulances have been called to the scene. There may be a ground stop in place. The fire department was engaged in a drill when the fire first began.
