WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Indiana State Police Superintendent Doug Carter confirmed the probe had found alleged evidence of such fraud in an interview he gave to the local television news outlet RTV6 broadcast on Friday.

Carter’s comments confirmed remarks made by state governor Mike Pence on Thursday. Pence is a Republican and is the vice presidential running mate of party nominee Donald Trump.

At least 25 state police officers are investigating possible registration fraud in 56 counties of Indiana, theiundychannel.com reported on Friday.

The investigation is focused on the Indiana Voter Registration Project, a subsidiary of Patriot Majority USA, described as a liberal leaning national political action committee, the report stated.

Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson said this week that possibly thousands of fraudulent registrations may have taken place. However, the Indiana Democratic Party has criticized the investigation as a partisan attempt at voter suppression.
