WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — According to the release, the amount includes 236 grants under the department’s Coordinated Tribal Assistance Solicitation (CTAS), totaling more than $102 million, to 131 American Indian tribes, Alaska Native villages, tribal consortia and tribal designees.
In addition, the Justice Department’s offices awarded $2 million to improve jurisdiction over domestic violence crimes and some $3 million in juvenile justice grants, according to the release.
The Justice Department said American Indian and Alaska Native communities face disproportionate rates of violence and victimization. They also encounter "significant obstacles" to accessing culturally relevant services, the release noted.
